On August 27th, 2010, A Memorandum of Understanding was undertaken to develop a sustainable cardiac programme at the Bustamante Hospital for Children.  Embodied in the MOU is the construction of a new cardiac facility which will include a cardiac catheterization laboratory, a new operating theatre, storage space and a new 10 bedded Intensive Care Unit for the hospital and the employing and continued training of key cardiac personnel.  Chain of Hope UK has partnered with Gift of Life Rotary District 7020, the Caribbean Heart Menders Association, the Congenital Heart Institute of Florida and the Cardiac Kids Foundation of Florida in order to make the new Cardiac Unit possible. This will dramatically increase the number of Children who will be able to receive heart surgery at the Bustamante Hospital for Children.

Gift of Life also took this opportunity to present the cardiac programme with a cheque for USD $60,000 which will fund the surgeries of 12 children.  Thank you Gift of Life!

The Mad Barking Cycle

The Beginning

The End

On Sunday 15th of August Al Barnes, Managing Director of Red Stripe, his brother Gordon Barnes and Mavin Anderson cycled 400 miles round Jamaica in 32 hours 44 minutes, with huge assistance from other cyclists Vaughn Phang and David Pines. The support they gathered was amazing, cyclists from the Cutter’s cycling club and the Jamaica Cycling Federation joined them for part of the ride and other cyclists joined them along the way to keep them going.  They raised an amazing JM $3 million for Chain of Hope Jamaica to give 7 children the life saving cardiac operations they so urgently need.  Dr. Sherard Little, our cardiothoracic surgeon and the rest of the Chain of Hope Jamaica team would like to congratulate and thank Al Barnes and the entire mad barking team for their outstanding performance and their commitment to giving our children the chance at life they deserve!
